THEMES IN AMERICAN FRICTION

Daniel Machado’s upcoming album, Themes in American Friction, is a post-modernist poem put to music. It is an auto-biographical, chronologically-arranged collection of songs that relate a coming-of-age story of broken beliefs, family, lost love and mortality.

Machado introduces himself as a calloused, cynical adult; a deformed version of the child he once was. He then sets the clock back 15 years and unfolds his transformation from the beginning. As a teenager, poised to graduate high school, Machado begins to doubt his life-long spiritual beliefs. Forced to look at life with out the safety net of his lost spirituality, Machado develops an abstract yet unshakable fear of death. As his fears manifest into panic and depression, he loses himself, his first love and the spirit that characterized his childhood.

At 23, Machado’s nihilism crescendos to a nervous breakdown, yet a crisis with his father’s health and the guidance of a new figure in his life, Jessie, force him to put his fears, his life, and his spirituality
into perspective.

CHILDHOOD & BACKGROUND

Daniel began his musical career at age 10 with classical training on violin. The ukulele that his parents gave him as child served as his introduction to the guitar and the world of rock and roll. His father taught him several chords and a few Elvis songs, yet after this young introduction to rock, Daniel put guitar playing to the side and spent the rest of his childhood making homemade movies and drawing cartoons.

At 16 he toured Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria with his highschool orchestra's Bluegrass ensemble playing guitar, banjo and mandolin. He was also a member of Chamber Choir. At 17 he became interested in songwriting and for the first time became truly serious about music.

GUITAR SHOW BAND

From 2001 to 2006 Daniel Machado performed and released material under the band moniker "Guitar Show". After several line-up changes and five years of ever-shifting styles, Daniel began using his own name as his musical banner. The departure of his sister who co-founded Guitar Show also served as inspiration for the name switch. Despite the change, the name Guitar Show remains an active part of Daniel's presence.
Machado now dubs the members of his rock outfit
the “Guitar Show Band”. [BAND MEMBERS]

CYCLE OF THEIR FATHERS - ROCK MUSICAL

In the summer of 2006 University of South Carolina Theater Department director Chad Henderson asked Daniel to adapt the songs and story from his The Ghosts of Our Childhood album into a rock musical. With Chad directing, Jessica Labbe leading the script writing process and Daniel serving as musical director, Cycle of Their Fathers the rock musical was born. The show featured a live three piece band and a 12 person cast ranging from age 14 to 40. Cycle of Their Fathers was produced by TRUSTUS and Armed Chair Productions and performed at TRUSTUS Theatre in Columbia, SC. The years of songwriting, months of preproduction, and weeks of rehearsing were awarded with a full run of nearly sold out performances and an extension of the show.
